Sphere's Immersive Sound System Arrives at Radio City Music Hall - Revolutionizing Concert Audio! (2025)

Get ready, New York – a revolutionary sound experience is about to echo through the halls of one of the city’s most legendary venues. The cutting-edge audio technology that turned Las Vegas’ Sphere into a sensation is making its way to none other than Radio City Music Hall. And here’s where it gets really interesting – this isn’t just an upgrade; it’s a reinvention of how live music and performances are heard.

MSG Entertainment has announced a massive $7 million investment to bring Sphere Immersive Sound to the iconic Radio City. The advanced system will debut just in time for this year’s Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes, before rolling out for all concerts and events starting in January. It’s a bold move that might just redefine the audience experience in one of the most acoustically respected venues in the world.

“We’ve always been committed to giving both artists and audiences an unparalleled live experience,” explained Josephine Vaccarello, Executive Vice President of Live for MSG Entertainment. “Radio City has long been known for its superb acoustics, and incorporating Sphere Immersive Sound is the next logical leap forward in both technology and the venue’s ongoing evolution.”

Both MSG Entertainment and Sphere are part of the Dolan family empire, led by James Dolan. The Sphere’s sound technology, already a hallmark of Las Vegas performance innovation (alongside its gigantic 160,000-square-foot LED screen), is now expanding its reach eastward – and some say it could spark a new era in venue audio design.

The new Radio City sound system will include over 7,000 individually amplified loudspeaker drivers, offering crisp, consistent audio at every seat in the house. This isn’t your average surround sound. Thanks to spatial audio innovations, the system can direct different sounds to specific parts of the theater, creating a fully immersive listening experience. Imagine hearing a single violin as if it were being played right beside you — no matter where you’re seated.

Vaccarello calls it a total game-changer: “With this technology, the person sitting in the front row will experience the same sound balance, depth, and clarity as someone in the last row of the third mezzanine. Every seat becomes the best seat.” She added that audiences will be able to hear every note from the Christmas Spectacular’s live 36-piece orchestra with pristine accuracy — each instrument perfectly distinguishable as sound moves dynamically through the room. Artists, meanwhile, gain the ability to shape their live soundscape in real time by ‘carving out’ or ‘canceling’ audio in specific areas of the venue for creative or acoustic effect.

If this sounds ambitious, that’s because it is. Sphere Studios has been working to bring this technology to venues worldwide, and Radio City is just the latest milestone. A similar system has already been installed at New York’s Beacon Theatre, another MSG property, showing that this is more than just an experiment — it’s the start of a scalable sound revolution. With proprietary features like 3D Differential Beamforming Technology and Intelligent Audio System Synthesis, Sphere Immersive Sound can adapt to different venue sizes and layouts, hinting at major opportunities for expansion. MSG’s planned Sphere in Abu Dhabi may just be the beginning.

“We never innovate for the sake of innovation,” Vaccarello emphasized. “Every new technology we adopt has to meaningfully enhance both the artist’s creativity and the audience’s enjoyment.” Her words mirror the company’s broader vision — integrating groundbreaking technology intelligently into iconic spaces known for their cultural and historical significance.

Meanwhile, The Sphere itself in Las Vegas continues to captivate with spectacles that blend music, technology, and visual artistry. From residencies by U2 and the Backstreet Boys to a mind-blowing reimagining of The Wizard of Oz complete with real tornado effects, flames, and winged monkeys, the venue has set a new entertainment benchmark that Radio City now seems poised to follow.

But will purists embrace this new era of digitally enhanced sound, or will they argue it disrupts the venue’s classic charm? The question is up for debate. Some might say it’s the future of performance; others may feel it risks altering the authenticity that made Radio City magical in the first place.

What do you think? Is this the beginning of a breathtaking new standard in live entertainment—or has technology gone one step too far in reshaping the concert experience? Share your take below — audiophiles, performers, and New York culture lovers, the floor is yours.
